1. Verify that you are running System software version 6.0.6 or later. If the System is 6.0.5 or earlier you need to upgrade your system software before proceeding. Contact your Apple dealer or user group.
2. Drag the MacRecorder® Driver 1.0.3 file into your System Folder. If you are running System 7 make sure that your System Folder is closed before dragging the MacRecorder Driver on top of it. This will automatically place the driver in the Extensions folder where it belongs in System 7.
3. Restart your Macintosh. The MacRecorder Driver icon will appear during startup, confirming that the MacRecorder Driver is installed.
NOTE: If the Driver appears on the screen during startup with an X across the icon then the driver has failed to load. Two common conditions that cause this are:
- Virtual Memory is turned on under System 7 (see below).
- Serial ports on a IIfx or Quadra 900/950 are not configured in "compatible" mode (see below).
To use the MacRecorder Driver
---------------------------
The MacRecorder Driver works with all applications that support the Apple Sound Input Manager. To confirm that the driver is working and properly configured, open the Sound Control Panel.
The installed drivers appear along the bottom of the Control Panel.
• Clicking the Add button brings up a recording dialog that allows you to record new system beeps.
• Delete system beeps from the list by selecting them and clicking the Remove button.
• The Options button confirms which serial port the MacRecorder is connected to.
The MacRecorder Driver will automatically sense which port the MacRecorder is connected to.
Making A Quieter Recording
------------------------
• AppleTalk should be off, network communication, such as File Sharing can prevent the
recorded sound from being cleanly written to disk.
• Deselect the "Flash icon while recording" option in the Preferences dialog
• Quadra and PowerBook users should be sure they are using MacRecorder Driver 1.0.3. It is
presently available on America OnLine, Compuserve, or Apple Link in the Macromedia forums.
This new driver offers improved performance over previous releases and resolves MacRecorder
incompatibilities with PowerBooks and Macintosh computers using 68040 processors.
• Hardware limitations of lower end Macintoshes and PowerBooks can sometimes cause noises
and clicks in recordings created with the MacRecorder. The SoundEdit Pro 1.0.3 offers the
option to optimize the operating system for silent recording. This option makes the operating
system unavailable to other programs and system extensions which may be running in the
background. As a result, this option should only be selected if no other programs are running
and it must be selected at the beginning of every recording session. We strongly recommend
using this option only if you are unable to make satisfactory recordings using the procedures
described above. This option may cause problems with some programs that require background
processing. If you think that you would like to use this option you must obtain the SoundEdit
Pro 1.0.3 Update.
MacRecorder Driver and System 7
------------------------------
You must turn Virtual Memory OFF before using this driver. This is done through the Memory Control Panel.
To install the Driver, make sure the System Folder is closed and drag the driver on top of the System Folder. It will be placed in the Extensions folder for you.
MacRecorder Driver and PowerBooks
--------------------------------
The MacRecorder Driver 1.0.3 resolves many incompatibilities with PowerBooks (see Making a Quieter Recording).
Quadra compatibility
-----------------
Make sure that you have:
(1) installed the Serial Switch (Quadra 900 and 950 only)
(2) turned off virtual memory
Macromedia has licensed the Serial Switch CDEV from Apple Computer to make our sound hardware and software compatible with the Macintosh IIfx and Quadra computers. Although you may edit and play sounds without using the Serial Switch, you MUST have the ports on a IIfx and Quadra configured in "compatible" mode for recording and testing input levels when using the MacRecorder digitizer with SoundEdit, SoundEdit Pro, HyperCard or any product using the MacRecorder Driver.
Installing the Serial Switch for IIfx and Quadras
-------------------------------------------
1. Drag the Serial Switch CDEV into your System Folder. If you are running System 7 make sure that your System Folder is closed before dragging the Serial Switch CDEV on top of it. This will automatically place the CDEV in the Control Panels folder where it belongs in System 7.
2. Open the Control Panel and select the Serial Switch.
3. Choose the serial port setting labeled "compatible" (rather than "faster").
4. Close the Control Panel.
5. Restart your Macintosh. Having the serial ports on a IIfx or Quadra in compatible mode does not adversely affect the operation of the computer.
